Backstory

The back story of a character, or a group of characters.

Char Bleeding

When the player's feelings or wishes impact on the character or vice versa, causing it to act in an uncharacteristic manner. See also Separation.

Character

The person the player pretends to be during RP.

Character Generation / CharGen / CG

The making of a character.

Combat Round

The length of time it takes for each character to get to act once, a basic time period of combat.

Elsemu*

Another mux, mush, mud...

Experience points

Credit for overcoming challenges, given on Chronicles by the staff or by votes from other players. See Gaining Experience for more details.

IC

In character - these are actions entirely owned by your character, and not by the player. Thus, Lizzy's actions are not Sally's, and Vice versa.

ICA=ICC

In character actions = in character consequences. For example:

Lizzy has in the past attempted (and failed) to steal Grissom's wallet. The consequence of that, decided by Grissom, was that she was put into a bucket of dirty water, head down. I, as her player, accepted those consequences as a result of my actions.

ICK

In character knowledge. What your character actually does know!

Level

Characters here start at level, and go up through levels by gaining experience points.

Log'

The record of the event, in a .txt format, send in to gain XP from it. See Gaining Experience for more details.

Lurk / Popcorn

One who enters the room and just watches. Many new roleplayers may feel more comfortable doing this for a period, and are utterly welcome to do so, provided all roleplayers are comfortable with it!

Mary Sue / Gary Sue

Your character is perfect in terms of personality and looks. You may find that instead of everybody loving that char, they will hate it. Perfect characters aren't realistic and the nicest person has flaws, which make them more interesting to play. These are humourous names for this type of char, and there is a Mary Sue Litmus Test.

Metagaming

Using OOC knowledge for IC purposes, for example:

I know OOC that Desmond has information on Aimee that he could use. Aimee does not ICly know this. If I have her worry about it ICly, or respond ICly to it at all, that would be metagaming.

Mun Consent

This is where a player asks to be informed before certain consequences are applied to their character.

Munchkin

Similar to the twink, this player is more immature and will throw their toys from the pram if not allowed their way.

NPC

Non-player char. A character, normally run by the GM, the supporting cast or antagonist.

One Liner

A pose that is one line long. Normally, you would apologise for this, since it is unusual that you can't include enough detail to move the story along. It is really hard to reply to a one liner, but perhaps, if your last pose was so bad that was all the person could write in response, it could be your fault!

OOC

Out of character - Actions that are not owned by your character and are instead the actions or words of the player.

Phantom

Someone who schedules RP with people and either never arrives or has to go and do something else immediately.

Plot

The story line, the events that are linked to enable the roleplay to stay interesting. This can be mux wide, or personal to the players involved, anything from a romantic relationship to invasion of the robots...

Pose

The emote/emit you do to show what your charactor just did. 'Pose in' means to enter a scene, 'pose out' to leave it. For example:

Lizzy turns, with a broad grin on her face, and greets you with a lift of her pint.

Powerpose / Godmodding

Someone else forcing your character to do something. For example:

Lizzy leans forward, thumping her fist into your stomach, making you fall to your knees.

I would actually post that action thusly:

Lizzy aims a fist towards your stomach, with enough force to bring you to your knees should it hit.

The last pose gives the player on the receiving end of the punch a choice about their response.

It can be equally acceptable to agree in advance, OOC, that the blow will hit.

Pulling an Ordo

Sending a mis-pose to the wrong place. Ordo is a player on Chronicles who was notorious for doing this in the middle of a TP - a graphic description of his activities elsemu* in the middle of a big fight.

Retcon

Retcon is short for 'RETroactive CONtinuity.' If a player makes a mistake, and for example, uses an item that was dropped earlier, the polite and correct thing for that player to do is to make an OOC comment of retconning the action, and for other players to continue.

You are only able to retcon something your character did, that just happened. It cannot be used to explore the range of outcomes from a scene.

RP

Roleplay

RPer

One who roleplays!

Scene

The roleplaying session.

Separation

In character and out of character separation is where the boundaries between player and character are. Problems arise when the separation becomes blurred and the player and character become the same person, or emotions from one bleed into the other. An example of this could be where two characters are emotionally involved, and one of the players does not understand that the other player is not interested nor involved. This can lead to a messy problem!

Slash / Yaoi / Yuri

Same sex relationships. Yaoi and Yuri are Japanese terms used in anime.

Text / Chat Speech

Terms like 'lol'. These should never be used in Roleplay. Ever.

Twink

Someone who doesn't care about any part of roleplay but to make their character most powerful in any given situation. For example, this will be someone who is able to do everything better than every other character.

Typos

A spelling mistake, a hurried typing error. We all make them from time to time but if you are doing this repeatedly, invest in a spell checker!
