MEADOW AND FORGE
It's a fine day here in late September as North America begins to prepare for the coming winter. The trees that surround Pavel's meadow have long since turned beautiful colors of red and gold, so much so that even the bright ribbons almost seem muted. Fortunately, the the jingling of bells on the wind points them out. Over at Pavel's medieval forge, the smith is busy hammering away at something, singing rhythmically; a common tip that helps to keep blows on track in many different industries. Zoyenka and Blagodat are roaming around, nipping at the grasses that continue to grow and ready to check out anyone entering through the low rock wall that has been lain along the border near the road.
Rasputin comes walking through the small meadow, down towards the blacksmith's abode. He is carrying one cane, and walking with the other. If one looks closely, he really isn't using the cane much just kind of flipping it along side. How did he get out here? Odds are he hitched a ride with one of the many farmers running back and forth between here and town. It is fall harvest after all. He hails over the din of the hammers, in Russian, "Afternoon Pavel!" He says loudly from a little bit away, so as not to start the working man by getting too close.
Pavel looks up and waves, probably not surprised by something coming into his own domain. But one might never know. Though the war horse was content to graze, Zoyenka has trotted over to do what she normally does - nuzzle at people's heads and shoulders, no matter how big or small they may be. The smith works his way through a few more blows before setting his tools down and wiping his large hands on his apron. Doesn't really do anything to get them clean, but it does smudge soot around. A casual brush to move some hair out of his eyes leaves a bit on forehead and cheek. << Rasputin, hello! What are you doing all the way out here? I sure didn't expect to see you, but I'm glad you've come by, >> he says with a toothy grin.
Rasputin smiles, and eyes the large horses on the field. He isn't sure how he feels about a four legged creature which is 6 to 8 times its own size. He smiles, "Da, da." His Russian continues, "I thought that I should come to you, as you have often come into town. And I was going to be asking you a favor of sorts." He smiles and keeps walking closer, till he within talking range, rather than shouting range.
Pavel walks out from beneath the roof, happy to meet Rasputin in the sun. << Well, I'd be glad to help, I'm sure. I'm afraid that I don't have anything much to offer in the way of food and drink. When I'm thirsty, all I need is that cup ->> he points to a nice metal cup above one of his benches <<- and a water source. >> This time he nods toward the hollowed-out rocky hill that he calls home, where a fairly large and crisp stream flows by.
Rasputin grins and shakes his head, "Net, net," he continues in Russian, "It is OK. I've been, thinking over our conversation regarding magikal energy." He smiles and tugs his beard, "For the final design requires a bit of magikal work, a bit more than I can do myself." He looks over his shoulder as one of the horses wanders towards him. He turns and looks at it, "That is a large creature, lovely, but," He moves away a little, "So tall?" He chuckles, and looks back to you.
The smith raises his hands and makes a *CLICK-CLICK* noise with his tongue. << Zoyenka! Somewhere else. >> The animal probably doesn't actually understand Pavel's words, but through plain reiteration since he's had her, she knows to whinny, snort and wander off, leaving the two men to be. That issue concluded, Pavel returns to the conversation with Rasputin. << Energy, yes? I can help. Almost everything that I do here is nothing more than anyone could do. Just better quality and a lot faster. But otherwise normal, so this... energy that I need? I usually don't need it. >>
Rasputin nods slowly, "Da, da." He moves a little closer to you, perhaps together you both will be larger than the horse, "Do you expend magikal energy as you are making things? In a physical process perhaps?" He thinks a bit, tugging his beard, "Kind of like how I cast magiks through words and gestures, similar."
Pavel's brow scrunches at that question, and his lips purse to the side as he thinks. << I know that the answer is yes. That's what Svarog does when he makes people like me, we get magic. Become magic, some have said. Though personally I don't use words and gestures, or even really think about it. I need to do things, and when I need to do things that others can't do? >> He shrugs and pauses, then throws off a hand. << It just happens. Works. Sure, I can do things like what I did with the dinosaurs; light fires where I want, things like that. Why? You need to take some? >>
Rasputin chuckles and nods, "Da, da." Rasputin continues in Russian, "I'm wondering, if you could lend me some of your energy over a few days. So I can finish off the canes, it takes me about a quarter more power than I can handle. It would take me a day or two, to do it. Then another quarter more." He thinks, "It shouldn't harm you, it just recharges over time, da."
The large fellow's head bobs, and his face smiles. << Sure! I know that it comes and goes, I'm not worried about losing it. What do I need to do? Oh, and before I give it, do I get to know what the cause is? >> Pavel's face turns hopeful before it is momentarily blocked as he removes his apron to promptly hang on a nearby sturdy nail.
Rasputin thinks a few minutes and nods, "Da, I will show you da outcome. It becomes a magikal," he pauses, "Well, more magikal. Da?" He smiles a bit, "It takes several hours to cast, but once it is done, I'll show it to you, da?"
Pavel shakes his head. << No, no. I mean, before it happens. What to expect it to do. You can have what you need either way... I just like to watch things be built, and know what the artist is going for before it's done. I guess this is one of those things with circles and incense and chanting? A spell like that? >> Since both men are standing and there's a rather large height differential, he drops to a comfortable one-knee stance to even out eye levels.
Rasputin nods slowly saying, "Ah!" he chuckles, "I didn't understand, sure, I could perhaps even perhaps do the enchantment here, wouldn't cause an issue. It is a magikal spell, da." He thinks, "This magical spell, will enhance da cane's ability to harm nasties, but not normals. It dwill also make it a bit stronger." he tugs his beard, "It also will be able to be castink spells out of it, like magik wand."
<< Oh! Interesting! >> Pavel says with forceful enthusiasm. << I didn't know that you needed it to be stronger. I could have done that for you. But, I guess.. why two? >> This observation leads to another raising of an eyebrow in thought. He makes another *CLICK-CLICK* noise out of necessity when a curious Zoyenka wanders back over. << It's quiet out here, when I'm not hammering, and I could give you plenty of quiet time if you'd like. Nature is sweet, yes? >>
Rasputin chuckles and shakes his head, "Net, net. It is an after effect of da magik. A bonus to make it stronger," He grins a bit then looks over to Zoyenka with a weary eye, then looks back to you, "I like havink two of everything. Just in case one breaks, da? They will be identical, as you made them. And as I enchant them." He shifts a little, "Such a natural beauty," he looks at the horse and the surrounding around it.
<< Very, very interesting, Rasputin. I can't wait to see them in action. What kind of spells will they cast to be hurting the nasties but not the normals? >> Pavel waves at the canes and laughs, << Don't forget, the pointy end hurts! >>
Rasputin chuckles and nods, "I'm trying to make that choice, most likely Negate Poison, Turn dead, and Fear. Three useful spells, as for da damage, it will be magically a nice club." He chuckles, "Of sorts."
Pavel's expression likely shows that the spell names aren't registering any additional information behind the terms. << So, I guess I can probably guess at what those mean? Like I said, I don't study things like that... if you said 'shovel' or 'hammer' perhaps, I would know what you're saying, >> he chuckles. << If you needed them to be good clubs, I could have done that, too. I like clubs. I'm very good at clubbing things! >> His head nods back into the forge where indeed, there hang many hammers and bludgeoning instruments of all types and sizes.
Rasputin chuckles, "Basically, one spell will cure someone who has been poisoned, another turns walking dead, and the last spell," he stalls a moment, "Well it scares people away from the holder. Kind of a deterrent spell. As for the club, it just is an after effect of the magik I work. Your craftsmanship was much better overall than anythink I could do."
Pavel nods again. << Well, if you ever need a hammer or a club, I can 'hook you up' as they say. But back to your business... how do I, um.. give you magic? >>
Rasputin nods slowly, "Just open yourself up, not something I would askink often." His Russian being clear, "Just allow me to take it. I'll be careful, about take what I need." He thinks a moment, "Dis dhat make sense?" He tugs his beard, "Hard to explain, da."
Pavel can only shrug. He doesn't get it, clearly, but has faith that whatever is happening isn't going to be harmful. << Okay. I'm open? Do whatever it is you need to do. >> He smiles, and holds the expression with a heavy dose of anticipatory curiosity.
Rasputin grins, and just waves his hand, there is a slight quiver in the air as there is a transfer of magik. Rasputin grins a bit as he tingles himself a bit, "This is interesting, never done dis before da." He smiles, "Did dhat hurt you at all?"
<< Hmm? It's done? >> Pavel asks, surprised. << Are you sure it worked right? I'm fine, no, no hurt. I didn't know this was the first time you'd done this. Not that it makes a difference. So you'll be by again, to finish? Or working here? >>
Rasputin nods slowly, "Da, da. Dis OK? Maybe in a few days, if that is OK?" He smiles, "I could cast a my first spell here, for you if you like too. It doesn't take me much to do it."
<< That would be just fine, >> Pavel says. He motions toward the canes that he contributed to. << Can't wait to see what they do! I also hope that you never have an opportunity to test out the dead turning spell, right? >> At that point, Zoyenka lets out a loud whinny, and even Blagodat's heavy hooves move toward the low rock wall. A small horse-drawn wagon pulls in, and Pavel sheepishly explains, << Oh, I need to be very rude, Rasputin. Martin is from the village out east, needs a bunch of hoes for his veggies. But you're welcome to come up whenever you like. Go talk to Zoyenka, she'll take you home. >> With a wink and a nod, he's off to his other business.
Rasputin chuckles and nods, he eyes the creature and smiles. He says, "Da, well I'll show you the casting of the other. I'll see you in a few days."
