Psi-Nullifier
From Chronicles
Question:
Can people detect the source of the Psi-Nullifier if they are using their abilities?
Answer: Most of the time, the players won't be able to figure out what is going on when they direct attacks towards a Psi-Nullifier directly. But, if they attack the same PC or NPC several times they may realize that the effect is associated with that character. Even if not noting the abilities per se, they will likely notice that they must pump more PPE/ISP into their magical or psionic attacks to be effective - and if it works, probably use that new tactic in combat.
Question:
Can you use Alter Aura to cover over the top of your aura? Or does your innate ability cause an issue?
Answer: Due to a Psi-Nullifier's ability, the Aura is normally invisible. Thus, Alter Aura would be useless, unless the Psi-Nullifier's innate ability was to be suppressed, then the "new" aura altered.
Question:
It is stated that unshielded emotions are picked up by Telepathy/Empathy, does this only count when they are outside of the 10 ft affected radius?
Answer: Within the standard radius of those powers, unshielded emotions would only be picked up if the power was actually being directed at the character. A generalized scan will not detect them. However, as normal, using Mind Block would shield them even from this closer scrutiny.
Question:
Can a Psi-Nullifier effect a Techno-Wizard Device?
Answer: A Psi-Nullifier can only effect the charging of a Techno-Wizard device, not the use of one. Furthermore, a Psi-Nullifier can use a Techno-Wizard devices, but only if it they are already charged. The Psi-Nullifier can charge them, but it would require a greater expenditure of magical energy. This applies to other magical devices as well.
Question:
Willful Nullification: Can a Psi-Nullifier effect someone casting a spell such as Armor of Ithan if it is outside of the 10 ft but within the 100 ft + 10 ft per level? What about a psionic ability?
Answer: As explained on Worldbook 12: Psyscape p67, the answer is yes. Doing this does require a free action to be available. To determine if the Psi-Nullifier beats the caster to the punch, the Psi-Nullifier and the caster (or Psi user) must both make opposed initiative rolls. The Psi-Nullifier receives a +6 bonus to this initiative roll. If the Psi-Nullifier rolls higher than the caster, then the spell is nullified. If the caster rolls higher, then the spell is cast. Either way the Psi-Nullifier spends an action/attack to do this.
With regards to Psionic abilities and/or powers. This is more difficult, as there are no indicators of psychic action, and the Psi-Nullifier must know or anticipate that power or ability is about to be used in order to attempt a nullification. As above, this takes an attack/action. Assuming there is a free action available and the Psi-Nullifier believes a psionic power will be used, an initiative roll is still required as above. However, in the case of psionics, the Psi-Nullifier receives a -6 penalty.
If the Psi-Nullifier has the power Detect Psionics and it is already being used, then the penalty is negated, and the initiative roll made as normal.
Question:
Can Psi-Nullifiers be detected or sensed by Psi-Stalkers or Dog Boys with the ability to Sense Psychic or Magic Energy?
Answer: Yes, the Psi-Nullifier might be picked up if within range of a Psi-Stalker or Dog Boy. However, Psi-Nullifiers are rare and thus Dog Boys and Psi-Stalkers most likely won't be able to identify what they are immediately sensing.
Question
Please explain the statement on page 68 of WB12, which starts "Thus, fellow psychics..."
Answer: The majority of psychics use psionics to detect someone. Psi-Stalkers and Dog Boys actually pick up the scent of a target, this doesn't apply. It isn't actually using true psychic ability to do this. It is a natural ability.
Question
On p127 of Coalition Wars 1: Sedition (3rd paragraph under Camp Fatale) indicates that Nullifiers interfere with Stalkers'/Dog Boys senses entirely.
Answer: The Psi-Nullifiers would blanket the mages and psi's so their latent magic and psi wouldn't bleed out. Of course, this hides their raw magical ability and psi. Not their scent. This of course would greatly confuse Psi-Stalkers and Dog Boys.
