Multitasking
From Chronicles
So you’d like to make the most of your IC time when your PC is not being used for RP or TPs. Here is the structure for multitasking:
It is a given that your PC spends 6-8 hours a night sleeping. If you have a case to make for your PC spending less time in bed, please submit a request for review of the exception.
It is also a given that your PC spends 6-8 hours per day doing some manner of work for basic income. This pays your rent and other living expenses. If you have an actual job you receive additional income on top of that. If you would like to find a job please submit a request to do so.
So this leaves 8-12 hours a day your PC spends in RP, TPs, building something or learning something. Obviously these amounts are not fixed in stone day by day. They will fluctuate often. These are the averages, the status quo. Due to these natural fluctuations, it has been proposed that only being able to act on one learning request or one building request at a time may be less than realistic, slightly harsh for for a MUX world. We concur, and have drafted a model which will allow PCs to request and hopefully accomplish more than one such activity at a time (learning, building, etc.).
The basic tenet of the new system is that the more complex the activities being added, the more total time that it will take. This makes sense, as in the real world we often do more than one thing at a time, but we can usually accomplish one thing faster if we focus all of our attention on it, rather than splitting it between multiple tasks.
For our purposes on Chronicles, simple activities can easily be paired without any impediment. Very complex activities demand all the available time and cannot be paired. Within those boundaries exist the graduated scale of shades of gray.
| 1 x time | 1.1 x time | 1.2 x time | 1.3 x time | 1.4 x time | 1.5 x time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 spells | Level 2 spells | Level 3 spells | Level 4 spells | Level 5 spells | Level 6 spells |
| 3 week skills | 4 week skills | 5 week skills | 6 week skills | 7 week skills | 8 week skills |
| Item creation |
PCs may multitask with a maximum of two learning/building/etc. at a time. These may be put together in any combination. When pairing these activities, BOTH activities will have their final time extended by the factor for the longer activity as listed above. For instance, two three week skills may be learned at the same time, with no penalty as shown. Or one level one spell and an eight week skill may be worked on at the same time - but the level one spell will now be affected by the eight week skill, extending its learning time to 1.5x its original demand.
