THE NUT AND BOLT
Galvin is sitting at the bar at a spot closest to the front door. He has a handheld computer in front of him, and is working on a few designs. A cold beer is sitting in front of him, from which he takes the occasional sip. The bar isn't too crowded this early in the afternoon.
The weather outside is less frightful, these days. Sure, it's still winter, and this is probably just a warm spell, but it's still nice. Gabriel steps in through the door of the bar - thankfully a tad quieter on his ears than normal - with a smile on his face. He's also carrying a large rifle, one which also sports a very obvious trigger lock. After a few moments of blinking to adjust his eyes to the light, he spots the man he's looking for, and begins toward the counter, and Galvin, a small bag at his side. His snow gear? Mostly off.
Galvin perks up as soon as Gabriel and the rifle come closer to him. He turns around in his seat and looks over his shoulder at Gabriel. "Oh hey Gabriel. How's it going. Nice rifle you have there, why you bringing it in the bar?" He asks while he puts his computer a little off to the side.
The older man splits a wide grin as he gets to where the technician is sitting. Or whatever job description he uses on himself. "Galvin! You know, we should spend more time together, my friend. Honestly, I have very few guys to hang out with, make dirty jokes with, y'know?" He'll give the fellow a light and friendly shoulder punch. "In fact, not counting you? Two. Or maybe one and a half. Anyway," Gabriel says, holding the rifle out toward the other man - toward, not at - "I have some work that I'd like done. The rifle." He digs into his bag and retrieves a set of optics. "The scope."
Galvin chuckles and shakes his head. "Well isn't too hard to find me. Anytime you want to hang out just give me a ring." He says as he picks up his beer and turns over to Gabriel. "Why did you pick up a kinetic weapon like this?" He asks as he briefly looks down at the rifle. "Shouldn't take too long to put the optics on the rifle. Just a few minutes."
"Oh, apparently I need it to kill something. Kind of like needing silver and wood to kill the undead." Gabriel waves a hand in the general direction of the Tolkeen area. "Got some people roaming around up to the far north, torching towns and such. Actually, I wasn't really given much time to know what the fuck is going on... but that's the best I was allowed to get. Where I'm going with this is that these guys are - according to some of the party - 'Mystic Knights.' I don't know if that's a title, description, or something else, but that's what they called 'em." He shrugs and chuckles at the same time. "Apparently, kinetic energy is to these guys what silver, wood, and water is to vampires. Hence - I blew a lot of bucks on this thing. NTI isn't my favorite, but I couldn't find any other slug-thrower that did decent damage. You have an opinion of it?" Gabriel truly seems to be interested in what may be expert knowledge.
Galvin shrugs his shoulders. "I would just go for a rail gun. Seems like a much better solution to me at least." He takes a quick sip from his beer before setting it back on the bar. "I don't like the specialized ammo for NTI. I like open designs that allow for interchangeable ammo. But if this is what you need I can fix it up." He picks up the rifle and the optics. His fingers quickly and expertly start to attach the scope to the rifle without Galvin ever looking down at what he is doing.
The Kentuckian nods his head. "Yeah, I've heard about the rail guns. Lot more than I could realistically haul around, much less fire. Knock me right on my ass. Worse than trying to fire a Ma Deuce from the hip!" Whatever that may mean exactly, it makes Gabriel laugh. He hands over the NTI rifle and the optics, a nice Wilk's set. "If I read the advertisement correctly, I get a good burst accuracy with the rifle itself, and small bit of sniping accuracy with the scope. But I know what you mean. I like versatility in my weapons. If you know of somewhere else I can by good KE (comes out as Kay-EEE) weapons, please, let me know." Gabriel orders a Donovan's Fizz.
"Well maybe you should try a vehicle then." Galvin says while rolling his eyes. "But you want to use a pea shooter go ahead. I like weapons that don't just piss people off." He picks up his beer and sips from it, pausing only briefly in modifying the weapon. "Just figure out a way to use real weapons not these little things. Get a vehicle and mount some weapons on it."
Gabriel blushes slightly. "Yeah, there is that. I kind of forgot a lot of things when I was brought here. All that I remember how to drive are things with tracks. From tanks to trucks, as long as it has tracks. But - I sure as hell can't afford anything yet. But I have a bit of a business venture in mind. We'll see." He can't help but laugh at himself. "So this is just a pea shooter? You know these Mystic Knight things?"
Galvin shakes his head as his hands work with the rifle with great dexterity while he speaks. "I try to stay away from mystic and magic crap. I work with technology. Magic can keep to its self. No one person should have that much power coming out of nowhere." Galvin says with a slight frown before pausing again to sip on his beer. "Well buying lots of weapons isn't going to help you save money."
"Tell me about it!" Gabriel gives a happy and ironic - and annoyed - grunt. "Seems like everything needs a special weapon. Not groups of things either. Not like you can buy a bazooka and take out every tank. No, you need a specialized bazooka to take out each different type of tank. Sometimes a different bazooka to take out each tank within each type of tank. Kind of pisses me off, I agree." After tipping back his Fizz for a slight time, he adds on, "I guess I haven't been around enough to make a real, final decision on magic and psychic crap. But I admit, it's creepy."
"Well if you want I can save up for a rail gun and mount it on my ATV. You are welcome to borrow it if you want. I could even teach you how to drive it." Galvin says with a slight smile as he puts down the rifle for a moment to wave down the bartender for another beer. "Heck I can teach you how to use the radar in that sucker. It is pretty cool."
Gabriel tilts his head to the side. "For some reason, I still remember how to use radar systems. Not exactly like these, of course, this are... well, science fiction. But radar I can do. Driving for some reason eludes me." He smiles and sips from his bottle again. He then looks quite interested in the rail gun - ATV concept. "I've actually been thinking of something of an agreement like that. I'd need a technician, and another person such as myself - hopefully more adept at modern technology than I am, but along similar military lines."
"Well I know how to use most heavy weapons. But energy rifles not so much." Galvin says with a little laugh. "Well you ever need me along for a job I'll be happy to help. I can do some great things with technology. I can also stop and possess machines from a distance. Helps with power armor and what not. Of course I am of little use against magical creatures. I only own one pistol after all. Maybe I can help you with the driving."
"Driving works, for sure. But if push comes to shove, I can walk hundreds of miles by myself. What I can't do?" Gabriel holds out his hand, palm up. "Be really careful about fixing modern tech. Sure, patches here and there, the occasional scope to weapon if I'm not too worried about hurting it. But this incredible stuff you do? Repairs, mounting, recharging?" He points a polite finger at Galvin. "I don't suppose that you can build things, from a set of specs, from scratch?"
Gabriel can see that the other man is getting ready to go, and he stands politely, finishing his Fizz. "Hey, ah, I know that I don't need to say this, but those things are pretty expensive. Don't play baseball with 'em, okay?" He winks and extends a hand to shake as Galvin apparently departs.
Galvin laughs and shakes his head. "Not to worry. I will take good care of it. Not to worry." He says as he takes Gabriel's hand and shakes it. "Get it right back to you."
"Sounds good," Gabriel replies. "See if I can't get drunk on a soda. Stay warm." With that, he returns to his seat and starts up small talk with those around him. On a normal day, he'd probably leave to. But it's rather quiet today, so why not?
